If you are over the age of 25, the term "Emo" is probably completely foreign to you, however if you are a teenager, it is a word you know well. "Emo" is short for "emotional" and the Emo style has connotations toward the punk rock lifestyle coupled and crossed with the Gothic lifestyle. The chief thing that sets people apart from others and labels them as an Emo is the hairstyle. Let's look at how to properly create the perfect Emo hairstyle.
Haircolor: The Emo hairstyle is notable for it's color, which it gets from the Gothic lifestyle - an Emo hairstyle must be black, however some variations of the Emo hairstyle have a single, thick white streak near the bangs. Some Emos say you aren't really an Emo unless you have this white streak because it is the stark white stripe that sets the Emo lifestyle apart from the Gothic, while other Emos think the starkness of the streak takes away from the "emotionally depressed" look. Other colors of hair need not apply for this strict hairstyling color code.
Your Emo hairstyle should be dyed midnight black, as black as you can possibly get it. However, it is important to note that if you just want to try out the Emo hairstyle, it is very difficult to get black dye out of hair and return it to a natural or other color. It is especially difficult to try to get black hair back to blonde, so before you run out and dye your hair permanently, you may want to do a black semi-permanent color to ensure you like the style. When dying black hair lighter, you have to use bleach, which can damage the hair significantly and usually ends up in cutting at least an inch off of the ends. The bleach will also turn your hair a brassy orange color from black, and while there are a few techniques to get rid of the brassy orange, it is not always an easy process without the help of a
professional. The decision to go to an Emo hairstyle should be one you are sure of, because changing your mind can be a lengthy, and sometimes expensive, process.
The Cut: The Emo hairstyle cut also has several variations, but mostly is what some 'old timers' would refer to as a blunt cut with bangs.
The most common Emo hairstyle is a blunt hair cut – hair that is cut in a straight line all the way around with a slight curl under. The blunt cut is also characterized with heavy bangs that are thick across the brow, in a line straight above the eyebrows as well as running from temple to temple.
The sides of this variation is cut above the ears bluntly tapering down to the neck where it is cut straight across in a blunt bob cut. Another variation of this style is to have the bangs from temple to temple, then a straight line downwards to a blunt cut (in front of the ears) that extends in a blunt straight line all the way around the head, usually just under the ear lobes or in line with the nape of the neck. The white stripe, if you want to add it, would be best placed in the center of the head on one side about an inch thick, which just falls behind the ears or could be tucked behind the ears.
The next most popular cut for Emo hairstyles has a fringe that covers half the face - characterized by long bangs that taper up to the bridge of the nose or the center of the eyebrows from the length. Some Emos think that this fringe is what truly characterizes the Emo lifestyle of Emotionally depressive, covering half of ones face. In this case, if you want to add a white stripe, it would best be placed in the middle of the bang fringe that hangs into the face.
Contour: The contour of hair is where a lot of the controversy begins. Some Emos use grease in their hair to spike it, however the truest of Emo hairstyles is not spiked but rather smoothly greased down, nearing the state of a 'helmet'. Hair pomade or hair grease can help to achieve this look by "greasing" the hair down to prevent fly-away hair or any body to the hair. Emo hairstyles work the best on people with thin and light hair because they don't need to grease it down to get it to stay in place. The epitome of an Emo hairstyle is the lack of bounce or body, and many Emos have to put some hair product in their hair to achieve the full look.
Style: The Emo hairstyle's actual style is quite depressive looking and it is meant to be. Hiding half of one's face or creating a stark, blunt line across the forehead is not a 'new' style, as the blunt bangs were popular in the 50s, albeit not in blackest black coloring. The white stripe in the hair is made to be contrasting against the black, a symbol of the difference to what the Emo person feels in comparison to the world. This stripe also helps to differentiate between Gothic and Emo lifestyles, which are vastly similar, yet also vastly different.
To tuck or not to tuck: Depending on the Emo hairstyle variation that you choose, the choice to tuck hair behind the ears lies in the person wearing the style.
For the variation with hair cut above the ears, there is no tucking required. However, for the blunt cut that extends from the bangs to a straight blunt cut without hair cut over the ears, many Emos tuck the sides behind their ears, while others don't.
For the Emo hairstyle variation with the fringe that hangs in the face, this is best not to be tucked at all, however the side without the fringe bangs can be tucked back as an indication of coyness of sorts. However, many Emos think that the more face you can cover with your hair, leaving only a portion of your face with one eye visible is what truly makes the Emo hairstyle unique.
So you want to go really dark, bolder, defined, yet not totally controlled. You want an emo cut. It might cover your eyes, have splashes of bold color within a black blunt cut. They're styles that are re- interpreted by you.
