Herbal tisanes are water based herbal infusions that are simple to make and to use. They can be adapted for any hair
color and the results are amazing. Making the basic tisane is simply done by steeping the herbs in boiling water.
Steeping takes 10-15 minutes then allow the water to cool to room temperature; this may take up to 1 hour. The rule of
thumb is approximately a total of 2 teaspoons of herbs per cup of water. If you are lucky enough to obtain fresh flowers
substitute tablespoons for teaspoons. Since rules were made to be broken you may use as little or as many herbs as you
please. Strain the tisane to remove all solids. To use the tisane simply rinse hair it.
The herbal tisane is made up of primary, secondary and tertiary herbs. Primary herbs designate the coloring while the
secondary herbs function as the treatment for the hair type. Tertiary herbs perform the task of conditioning or they may
act as an aromatherapy component. Selection of which herbs to use should be based on natural hair color and type. Hair
types are dry, normal and greasy. Light naturally colored hair will use the primary ingredient of chamomile flowers;
while shades of auburn will do best with marigold petals.
Normal hair types can select fennel or rosemary as secondary herbs. Greasy hair types will do best with peppermint or
lavender and dry hair will get added emollients from comfrey or marsh mallow. Thyme and marjoram are two common tertiary
herbs as they act as general conditioners. Other tertiary herbs which may be used to add scent is mint, lavender, or
cloves. You also may wish to add other aromatic ingredients such as rose water to the tisane.
To get you started here is a tested formula for shimmering honey gold highlights:
