In some areas of the country, "getting your colors done" is a must. What about the rest of us who don't
have access to something like that?
I'll let you in on a little secret I have learned as an Avon Certified Beauty Advisor.
Get a swatch of gold fabric and a swatch of silver. It has to be shiny or this won't work. Hold one at a time up to
you, under your chin.
How does it look?
Does the gold make you look sick? (You'll know if it does.) Or does it make you look warm, alive? You need to look
for warm colors.
Does the silver make you look washed out? Or does it brighten you up? You need to look for cool colors.
If both work well for you, congratulations! You're neutral.
Now let's clear the air a bit with brief explanations
of what's what.
• Warm colors: Based on reds, oranges, and yellows.
• Cool colors: Based on greens, blues, and violets/purples.
• Neutral colors: Based on earth tones.
Each section is on a spectrum, much like an artist's color wheel. If you're cool, some warm colors may work for
you and vice versa. If you're neutral, you may be able to use colors from all three sections.
Remember that what one color looks like on one person may not look the same on you.
How light or dark you want to go will depend on your complexion, hair color, and eye color. Don't be afraid to try
something new. Colors you think are too light might be just right. Be sure and test new colors in natural lighting for
best results.
